The Satya, Treta & Dvapara Yugas
In the Satyayuga everyone is a yogi (ascetic) and spiritually wise. Hence men cross over the ocean of this mundane world by meditating on Lord Hari. In the Treta yuga men perform all sorts of yagnas or sacrifices and offering all karmas to  the Lord, cross the ocean of worldly existence. In the Dvapara age men cross  the ocean of this temporal world by worshipping the feet of Lord Raghunath, since there is no other way out.

Worship of Lord Rama Makes us Cross the Ocean of this Mundane World in Kaliyuga
In the Kaliyuga there is neither yoga (a practice of abstract mediation undertaken to bring the soul towards union with the supreme spirit) nor yagna (sacrifices) nor spiritual wisdom. Men can reach the end of mundane existence only by singing the glories of Lord Rama. Therefore whosoever gives up all other beliefs and worships Lord Råma by lovingly praising His many virtues is undoubtedly the one who crosses the ocean of this material world. The power of chanting the Name is  evident in the age of Kali.  Kaliyuga has another sacred power (majesty), in this age projected acts of a virtuous nature are virtues but those which have an evil inclination are not sins.

Chanting the Name of Lord Rama
No other age is comparable to Kaliyuga if a person has faith (in its virtue). Because in this age one can easily cross the ocean of mundane existence by simply singing Lord Rama's glories. The four pillars of dharma  ( truth, compassion, penance and charity) are famed, out of which only one the leg (of charity) is predominant in the age of Kali. In whichever way charity is given it brings about our well being (salvation.)

Maya or Lord Rama's Illusory Power
Instigated by Lord Rama's Maya or power of illusion, the traits of all the four yugas manifest themselves in everyone's hearts and keep occurring everyday. The presence of pure Sattvaguna (harmony), affection, spiritual insight and the feeling of delight in the heart are the effects of Satyayuga. Abundance of Sattva with a slight mixture of Rajas, attachment to action, and happiness of every kind are the characteristics of the Treta age. When there is much of Rajas, little Sattva, and some Tamas, with a mingled feeling of joy and fear in the heart, it is the distinguishing trait of Dvåpara.

A Juggler's Trick of Deception
A large portion of Tamas with a slight mix of Rajas, with hostility and antagonism all around, are the effects of Kali. The wise identify the characteristics of different Yugas in their mind. Discarding unrighteousness, they love dharma or piety.  The law of Time (or drawbacks of this yuga)do not affect him who is intensely fond of Lord Rama's feet. O Pakshiraja! It is very fearsome for one who sees the deception practised by a juggler' but the tricks of a juggler cannot deceive his servant.

The Worship of Lord Hari in the Age of Kali
Good and evil, the gunas created by of Lord Hari's Maya or illusory power, do not leave us except when we worship Lord Hari. Keeping this in mind, and giving up all desires, one must worship Lord Rama (without any purpose.)

Born as a Sudra in His Previous Life, Kakbhushundi Leaves Ayodhya
O Pakshiraja! I lived for many years in Ayodhya. Once it so happened that a famine struck the city and I had to move to another place because of my miserable plight.

Recluses Build Grand Houses in Kaliyuga
Recluses build houses and furnish them at great expense. Asceticism is no more visible in them, having been wiped out by sensuality. The ascetics become wealthy and householders poor. O dear Garuda! The lila or play of Kaliyuga is beyond telling. Men drive out a wife who is virtuous and from a noble family, and abandoning good conduct, bring home some servant girl. Sons respect their father and mother as long as they do not see the face of their wives. When they become fond of their wife's family, their own kinsfolk seem like enemies.

Kings Inflict Punishment on Their Subjects
Kings are engrossed in sin and there is no sign of any piety in them. They constantly persecute their subjects by inflicting undeserving punishment on them. Rich people are considered noble even if they belong to a low caste. A brahamana is known just by his sacred thread, and an ascetic by his naked body.

The Vedas & Puranas are Shunned
Those who do not believe in the Vedas and Puranas are considered true saints and servitors of Lord Hari in the age of  Kali. There are hordes of poets but those who reward them (the munificent) are seldom heard of. There are many who find fault in others' virtues but none who are virtuous. Famines occur frequently in Kaliyuga. Everyone dies of misery due to lack of food.

Pakshiraja Garuda
Listen, O Pakshiraja! In Kaliyugas deceit, misguided zeal, hypocrisy, malice, heresy, pride, infatuation, lust and arrogance pervade the whole universe. Men do japa (the muttering of prayers), austere penance and charity, perform sacrifices and undertake sacred vows with some evil motive.  Gods (Indra) do rain not upon the earth and grains which have been sown do not grow.

Women Have long Tresses & Wear no Ornaments
Women wear no ornament except their locks of hair and  have a great appetite (are forever unsatisfied). They are miserable because of lack of money and attachment to so many things. Those fools want happiness but do not love  morality. They are poor in wisdom and hard-hearted, having no loving tenderness. Whereas men are tortured by diseases and find no bhoga or joy anywhere. They are arrogant and oppose others for no particular reason.

Pralaya or the Dissolution of the World
The mens' life is short, having a span of not more than a few years; yet they have such pride as if they are not going to perish even at the end of a kalpa   (dissolution of the world). Kaliyuga has made people insane: no one respects the sanctity of even one's sister or daughter. People do not have any contentment, discernment or composure. Those belonging to all classes, whether high or low, have become beggars. Envy, harsh words and greed abound; while harmony has vanished. People are wallowing in bereavement and deep sorrow.

The Stages in a Devout Hindu's Life
Conventional norms prescribed for the four ashramas or stages of life and religious obligations (which a devout Hindu is supposed to fulfil) have been ruined. Repression of the senses, charity, compassion and wisdom are not present in anyone. Whereas stupidity and fraud are on the rise.  Men and women are busy catering to the needs of their bodies; while those who speak ill of others are rampant all over  the world.

Chanting the Name of Lord Hari in Kaliyuga
Garuda, enemy of serpents! Listen. The age of Kali is the abode of vices and sins. But Kaliyuga has one great quality as well, that one is freed from the bondage of this mundane world without any effort. The same gati (ending, death and transmigration)which is attained through worship of God, performance of sacrifices or practice of Yoga in the Satyayuga, Treta and Dvapara, can be attained in the Kaliyuga just by chanting the name of Lord Hari.

All Men are Controlled by Women in Kaliyuga
O Gosain! All men are controlled by women, in particular, and dance to their tune like a monkey dances as per his  trainer. Sudras give the advise of spiritual wisdom to brahmins, and wearing the sacred thread around their necks, take the worst of gifts. All men are taken over by sensuality, greed and  anger. They are opposed to gods; the Brahmanas,  Vedas and saints. Unfortunate wives desert their good looking and virtuous husbands and attend to the needs of a paramour. The wives whose husbands are alive wear no ornaments, while widows adorn themselves in new ways, every single day.

A Guru Who Robs his Disciple is Cast into Hell
The relationship of a disciple and spiritual preceptor resembles that of a deaf man and a blind man; one (disciple) does not listen to the teachings of a guru, while the other (guru) cannot see (because he does not understand the identity of the self with the ultimate brahman. A guru who robs his disciple of money but fails to get rid of his sorrow is cast into a terrifying hell. Parents call their children and teach them precisely those means which fill their belly.

People can Kill a Brahmana for Greed in the Yuga of Kali
Men and women talk of nothing else other than the Knowledge of Brahma; but for greed they would kill a Brahmana or, their spiritual guide for a few cowries.  Sudras argue with brahmanas and brag that are we inferior to you in any way? A good Brahmana is one who knows the truth of Brahma, saying so they glower at them in anger.

The Relationship of the Individual Soul with the Supersoul
They who are covetous of another's wife, are clever at deceit and steeped in delusion, malice and worldly attachment. are knowledgeable men swearing by abheda or the identity of the individuated soul with the Supersoul.  I have seen this characteristic of the Kaliyuga. Doomed themselves, such people even ruin those rare souls who tread the path of virtue.

Those who Defame the Vedas Burn in Hell
They who find fault with the Vedas by reasoning, lie fallen in each hell for a whole Kalpa (cycle of the duration of the world). People of the lowest rank in society such as oil-men, potters, the outcasts (who cook and feed on the flesh of a dog), the kiråtas and kolas  or distillers of spirituous liquors, get their heads shaved and

 A Sannyasi
enter sannyasa (renunciation) when their wife is no more in this world and they have lost their household property.

The Endless Wrongdoings of Kaliyuga
They get themselves worshipped by the Brahmanas and ruin themselves in this loka and the other.  While the Brahmanas, are uneducated, greedy, lustful,  of bad conduct and stupid; and marry low-caste women of lewd character. Sudras do all sorts of japa (incantations), tapa or austere penance, and vratas, and narrate the Puranas from an exalted seat (as of an ascetic) All men follow a course of conduct as per their own will. The endless number of wrongdoings cannot possibly be described in words.

Religious Devotion to Lord Hari
In the age of Kali there is a confusion of castes (due to intermarriages) and everyone is fallen from sacred norms. They sin and suffer, terror, disease, sorrow and desolation (from their loved objects). Overcome by delusion, they walk not on the path of religious devotion to Lord Hari, which is endowed with dispassion and wisdom, and has the approval of the Vedas but dream of several new courses of their own.
