Chapter 23: Showering Grace on Krishnaji

Keshi Ghat, Vrindavan

After complete self-realization and following the divine command of working for salvation of the world, Shri Maharajji left Nandgaon and began living in Shri Dham. Shri Deviji had taken refuge in the feet of Shriji as per the heavenly ordinance of fate. You must be eager to know who all came after her and surrendered  to Shri.

A few months had passed since Shri Deviji's arrival at Shri Dham. One day it was revealed that when Shri Deviji had abandoned home and set out, her elder cousin sister Shri Krishnaji (daughter of her tauji or elder uncle) had accompanied her as a renunciate. They had parted two years ago and were roaming separately. Ever since they did not know the whereabouts of each other.

On hearing this from Shri Deviji it struck me that when one cousin had won the favour of Shriji and was residing in Vrindavan why should the other be deprived of his grace and keep wandering about in some other region? This thought possessed my mind for several days. On getting a chance I requested Shriji that since the other cousin was wandering about somewhere he should shower his grace on her also and make her reside in Vrindavan.

I do not have to call anyone. I do not have a resolve in my mind for anyone. Deviji had come because of the Supreme Being's ordinance.Hearing what I had to say Shriji instantly spoke in agitation,

Hearing Shriji I kept quiet but this thought that would Krishnaji be blessed or not, pricked me off and on.

My mind remained perturbed for a few days. So getting a chance I mustered courage again and prayed to Shriji with a melting heart. Shriji was silent but whenever my mind was reminded of this I would become depressed. On getting an opportunity I requested Shriji once again. This time round, he was not displeased nor did he keep quiet.

Well! If this is what you wish then find out through correspondence about her whereabouts ?” he said peacefully.

Ahmedabad

Getting this sort of an answer from Shriji I was delighted. However, even Deviji had no idea where Krishnaji was. Shri Deviji had got acquainted with a couple of people when she had been wandering around so wrote to them at a couple of places. The address of Krishnaji was conveyed by a devotee of Agra who knew both the cousins. She was in Ahemedabad at that time. Through him a telegram was sent to Ahmedabad asking Krishnaji to come and meet Shri Deviji who was residing in Vrindavan.

On getting the telegram Shri Krishnaji came to Shridham Vrindavan and initially stayed in Shri Radha Vallabh Dharmashala [1].Many years back when both the cousins had come to Vrindavan with their  uncle ( who was a lawyer) they had stayed in the very same dharmashala. In the morning Shri Krishnaji came to Ganga Mandir to meet Shri Deviji.

As you have read earlier Shri Krishnaji's father was very religious. So she had inherited these religious instincts since childhood. She had borne all troubles happily wherever she had wandered in forests and rural areas, in the company of Shri Deviji.

Wild Lions

When both the cousins had journeyed to Girnar Mountain, Krishnaji would keep sitting in a secluded spot in the dense jungles of the mountain, all day long and sing devotional hymns. Big lions and wild animals would live in Girnar but she was  least scared.

 Shri Dutta Paduka, Girnar

Once on going to the Dutta Paduka (wooden sandal of Dattatreya)perched on the topmost peak of  Girnar Mountain, and hiding there for three days without eating any food, she carried on doing bhajan and worshipping the divine. There is an ashram of Ramanandi[2] saints on the central path of Girnar. When the saints came to know of Krishnaji they searched for her and got her to the ashram. Thus she lived with Devij, not asking for anything. Both the cousins had separated to live in an unattached manner and Krishnaji roamed about fearlessly, all by herself.

Seeing her young age, sacrifice, forbearance and radiance the devotees of Ahmedabad were naturally drawn towards her, when she was journeying in Gujarat. She would have her satsang[3] amongst the devotees. They were extremely impressed by her brilliance, style of speech and expertise in exposition of the secrets of religious devotion. Soon after, they began inviting her for religious programmes being organised here and there. She too held a position on the stage in large religious congregations where great scholars and staff-carrying ascetics  would sit and deliver spiritual discourses. She would speak for two hours at a stretch in large gatherings, hearing which even learned persons and groups of ascetics would be astonished. So be it!

Shri Krishnaji had acquired great prestige when she came to meet Shri Deviji in the Ganga Mandir. She had her own independent views and was inclined towards detachment, forbearance and solitary sadhana. In a way she was ignorant of Vrindavan's mode of sentimental devotional practice.

Shri Krishnaji came and sat with her head bent down and kept talking to Shri Deviji. Shri Deviji gave her Shriji's introduction and told her about the glory and reverence of Shri Vrindavan Dham but she did not approve of them.

Kaliyuga, Age of Spiritual Darkness

Even Shriji preached to her about the Dham and exclusive worship of Lord Krishna, and explained,Women should not roam around alone in the ambiance which is dominated by kaliyuga, the age of spiritual darkness. In this yuga even true saints are very difficult to find. Therefore, you should live in the Dham with implicit faith and do bhajan.

Shriji tried to persuade Krishnaji in many ways but she was steeped in a different mindset. She could not agree to any of these suggestions in any way and lifting her bag, got ready to leave.

Seeing her take leave with such stubbornness and frenzy Shriji was pained.

Trickster Krishna, Son of Nanda

Okay, go! If the trickster Son of Nanda is true you will have to come back here within fifteen days,” he predicted in a frantic tone.

Krishnaji did not pay any heed to these words and left. Thirteen days had passed since Krishnaji had gone. Suddenly a telegram arrived from Ahmedabad stating that she had started for Vrindavan. We could not believe that she who had left in such a huff would be returning so soon.

It was the noontime of Kartik Shukla Chaturdashi (in the year 1948,Roman Calendar). Sitting in the Ganga Mandir, Shriji was writing a spiritual discourse. Shri Deviji and I were sitting next to him. When I stood up for some work and opened the outside  door , I saw Shri Krishnaji standing on the stairs. Her eyes were shedding tears and a suitcase was lying beside her. Calling out to Shriji from there itself I told him that Krishnaji had come and took her to him. Today was exactly the fifteenth day. Clasping Shriji's feet, Krishnaji wept bitterly.

When she calmed down Shriji asked her,You were not going to come back. How have you come?

“ I went straight to Ahmedabad after leaving you," replied Krishnaji.

Dark-hued Krishna Calls Krishnaji to Vrindavan

Eight days had barely gone by when my mind was in the throes of a forced call, drawing me to  Vrindavan. I tried my best to make my mind ignore this call but it was all in vain. I lost all interest in any kind of work. The thought of going to Vrindavan immediately possessed me. It was burdensome to pass each moment.

Ram Shalaka, Ramayan

I consulted the 'Ram Shalaka' of the Ramayana for my question and the answer came in the following single line of a couplet,' 'sunu siy satya asees hamari.' (This stanza has been picked up from Bal Kanda of the Ramayana. Here Goddess Gauri blesses Sita and confirms that her wish will be fulfilled.) When I saw the Ram Shalaka[4], a second time,  'pravasi nagar kije sab kaja '( taken from Sunder Kand of the Ramayana, when Hanumana prepares to enter Lanka. It says that do all deeds remembering God and you will get success) this line of a couplet was displayed. Thereafter I went to a temple to draw lots before the Thakur Vigraha (idol of the Lord) and there too the slip said: ' Must go! ' That was it! Soon after, I had a telegram sent instantly and set out by train. I have reached your holy feet and my mind is at peace now.

Shri Deviji was very happy on Shri Krishnaji's arrival in the Dham. I too felt good. Krishnaji also began to reside under the shelter of Motiramji. And thus both the cousins were able to live together in Vrindavan.

 Shri Balkrishna Das ji Maharaj

Shri Krishnaji had a very sharp memory. After listening to Shriji's satsang  she could recall and write the same in its entirety. She could also tell which discourse of Shriji was on which page of the collection. Shri Krishna ji had unparalleled faith in Shriji. Later on there was great deterioration in her health and treatment went on for years together. As of now, she mostly stays in solitude.
