119th & 120th Dohas of Uttar Kand


Chaupai:
     gyåna pamtha krpåna kai dhårå, parata khagesa hoi nahi bårå  |
      jo nirbighna pamtha nirbahai, so kaivalya parama pada lahai  ||1||
      ati durlabha kaivalya parama pada, samta puråna nigama ågama bada  |
      råma bhajata soi mukuti gosåi, anaicchita åvai bariåi°  ||2||
      jimi thala binu jala rahi na sakåi, koti bhå°ti kou karai upåi  |
      tathå moccha sukha sunu khagaråi, rahi na sakai hari bhagati bihåi  ||3||
      asa  bicåri hari bhagata sayåne, mukti nirådara bhagati lubhåne  |
      bhagati karata binu jatana prayåså,samsrti mula abidyå nåså  ||4||
      bhojana karia trpiti hita  lågi,  jimi so asana pacavai jatharågi  |
      asi haribhagati sugama sukhadåi, ko asa muRha na  jåhi sohåi  ||5||

 

 
The Path of Spiritual Wisdom
The path of spiritual wisdom is like the edge of a (double-edged) sword. O Pakshiraja! It does not take time to fall from this path. Only he who successfully treads it without any obstruction, attains the supreme state of (moksha) oneness with the absolute being. But this supreme state of supreme blessedness is most difficult to attain, say the saints as well as the Puranas, Vedas and texts (containing spells and incantations.) But, O Gosain! The same extremely rare mukti or slavation comes to us even without our wishing for it, by worshipping Lord Rama. 


 
Land Water
Just as water can not stay except on land despite our best efforts; In the same way, O Pakshiraja! Mark my words that the joy of moksha cannot stay apart from religious devotion to Lord Hari. Realizing this truth, the sensible devotees of Lord Hari spurn  salvation and remain enraptured by religious devotion.  


Bhakti or Religious Devotion of Lord Hari
By doing bhakti (religous devotion) ignorance, which is the root of metempsychosis (passage of the soul after death from a human or animal to some other human or animal body) is destroyed (on its own) without any effort or exertion. In the same way  as we eat for our own satisfaction but the fire of the stomach digests the eaten food (without any effort on our part). Who would be such a fool not to welcome such religious devotion to Lord Hari, which is so easy and imparts supreme joy at the same time?

Doha:
     sevaka sebya bhåva binu bhava na taria uragåri  |
     bhajahu råma pada pamkaja asa siddhåmta bicåri  ||119(A)||
     jo cetana kaha° jaRa karai jaRahi karai caitanya  |
     asa samartha raghunåyakahi bhajahi jIva te dhanya  ||119(B)||


 
Garuda, the Enemy of Serpents
O Garuda, the enemy of serpents! I am the sevaka (servitor) and God is my worshipful Svami (master). Without nurturing this feeling the ocean of this mundane world can not be crossed over.


Worship the Lotus Feet of Lord Raghuvir
 Reflecting over this established doctrine, worship the lotus feet of Lord Ramchandra. Blessed are those living beings who worship such an omnipotent Lord of the Raghus. He can make the sentient beings lifeless and lifeless matter sentient. (119 A-B)

         råma bhagati cimtåmani sumdara, basai garuRa jåke ura amtara  ||1||
         parama prakåsa rupa dina råti, nahi kachu cahia diå ghrta båt|
         moha daridra nikata nahi åvå, lobha båta nahi tåhi bujhåvå  ||2||
         prabala abidyå tama miti i, hårahi sakala salabha samudå|
         khala kåmådi nikata nahi jåhi,° basai bhagati jåke ura måhi°  ||3||
         garala sudhåsama ari hita hoi, tehi mani binu sukha påva na ko|
         byåpahi månasa roga na bhåri, jinha ke basa saba jiva dukhår||4||
         råma bhagati mani ura basa jåke°,dukha lavalesa na sapanehu° tåke°  |
         catura siromani tei jaga måhi je mani lågi sujatana karåhi°  ||5||
         so mani jadapi pragata jaga ahai,råma krpå binu nahi kou laha|
         sugama upåya påibe  kere, nara hatabhågya dehi bhatabhere  ||6||
         påvana parbata beda purånå, råma kathå ruciråkara nånå  |
         marmi sajjana sumati kudåri,  gyåna biråga nayana uragår||7||
         bhåva sahita khojai jo pråni, påva bhagati mani saba sukha khån|
         more° mana prabhu asa bisvåså, råma te adhika råma kara dåså  ||8||
         råma simdhu ghana sajjana dhirå, camdana taru hari samta sami |
         saba kara phala hari bhagati suhåi, so binu samta na kåhu° ||9||
         asa bicåri joi kara satasamgå, råma bhagati tehi sulabha biham  ||10||


 
Chintamani, the Gem which Grants all Our Wishes
I have explained in detail the established doctrine related to knowledge of spiritual matters (understanding of the identity of the self with the ultimate brahman). Now hear the brilliant radiance of religious devotion, which has been likened to a mani or gem. The beautiful chintamani (a supposed jewel granting its possessor all desires) of religious devotion to Lord Rama. On its own,  the gem of  bhakti sheds its radiance day in and day, in who ever's heart it resides . Requiring neither a lamp, nor ghee nor wick (to light it. In this way the mani is naturally radiant). O Garuda! And then, in whose heart such a gem resides, is not affected by poverty in the form of infatuation (because the mani itself is a form of wealth and does not give light with the help of something else.) 


 
The Radiance of Bhakti Dispels the Moths of Intoxication
With its radiance the powerful darkness of ignorance is dispelled and swarms of moths (in the form of intoxication etc.,) are defeated. Wicked inclinations like lust, anger and greed dare not approach the person in whose heart the gem of religious devotion abides. For him poison is transformed into ambrosia and enemies become friends. Nobody can attain happiness without this mani. He is never attacked by terrifying mental diseases from which all living beings suffer. He in whose heart the gem of bhakti  to Lord Rama abides does not have to bear the least of pains even in his dreams. Only they are paragons of clever wisdom in this world who relentlessly strive to secure this gem. Although this jewel is manifest (perceptible) in the mundane world but no one can attain it without the grace of Lord Rama.


 
The Mines of Lord Rama's Tales are Located in the Mountains of the Vedas
There are easy ways of finding it also, but unfortunate souls shun them. The Vedas and Puranas are holy mountains and the tales of Lord Rama are the glorious mines located in them. The saints are expert minerologists (who know the mysteries of these mines) and their beautiful intellect is the pickaxe (which digs). O Garuda! While spiritual wisdom and asceticism are the two eyes (surveying the mines). The living being who lovingly looks for it succeeds in discovering the gem of religious devotion, a mine of all blessings. O lord! I have this firm conviction in my heart, that a servitor of Lord Rama is greater than Lord Rama Himself.


 
Lord Rama is the Ocean & Saints are the Gathered Clouds
If Lord Ramchandra is the ocean, the wise saints are like the clouds. In case Lord Hari is the sandal-tree, the saints are the winds (that spread its perfume). Religious devotion to Lord Hari, which is so delightful, is the fruition of all spiritual endeavours.  No one has been able to attain it except through a saint. O Garuda! Realising this fact, whoever keeps the company of saints finds it easy to attain relgious devotion to Lord Rama.
 
Doha:
      brahma payonidhi mamdara gyåna samta sura åhi  |
      kathå sudhå mathi kåRhahi bhagati madhuratå jåhi  ||120(A)||
      birati carma asi gyåna mada lobha moha ripu måri  |
      jaya påia so hari bhagati dekhu khagesa bicåri  ||120(B)||


 
The Churning of the Ocean of Milk
The Vedas are likened to the ocean (of milk); spiritual wisdom is Mount Mandarachal; while saints are the gods who churn out nectar in the form of  sacred legends; in which the sweetness of religious devotion forever resides. Defending oneself by the sword of asceticism and slaying enemies in the form of intoxication, greed and infatuation with the sword of spiritual wisdom, it is religious devotion to Lord Hari which is triumphant. O Pakshiraja! Just think over and realize this fact. (120 A-B)
