Relishing Krishna's Rasa
Rasa has no beginning, no end, no order no sequence
and no comparison.
and no comparison.
There are no words to express it, no ears to listen to it
and no mind in which it can be contained.
and no mind in which it can be contained.
If rasa[1] itself has managed to create a place to reside in[2] then there is the mind, eyes, ears and every fibre of one's being to taste it. But if rasa becomes the vantage point of rasa then there are no eyes, ears, nose and tongue to relish it.
Supreme Form Krishna
Eyes are seeing, ears are listening and the tongue is talking about the Supreme Form [3] in which the Primordial Self is contained.
The Primordial Self (Paramatman)
Initially the Primordial Self existed, since when, is beyond our imagination. We can’t say that it existed since the eternal beginning, we can ‘t even imagine since when. That is not what matters.
We can’t say that the Supreme Form (Krishna) forgot everything. Everything is this rasa, then what did He forget. Of course, He forgot from where rasa could be relished.
We forgot to observe it, forgot to hear it and did not let the tongue speak about it. It seems that it could not be seen, could not be heard, couldn’t be spoken of or contained in our limbs and every fibre of our being.
Krishna is Rasa & He Created Prakriti
The mind, eyes, ears, tongue, body and every fibre of our being are rasa, rasa, rasa, rasa. Rasa created this charming prakriti [4]for the sake of relishing its own joy, so that it could romantically dally and reside on earth. But when we say created we unnecessarily imagine that it did not exist since eternity.
Words like reside and dally are indicative of rasa. Either the earthly fields where it takes place are loaded with rasa or the earthly fields are rasa and just rasa.
Rasa created this world to relish its own self.
Krishna's Rasa Can Be Relished By Prakriti
Rasa can be relished by prakriti. Krishna can be called and addressed as 'Rasik Shekhar Chudamani' by the tongue as we feel His presence. Rasikas have been hearing the juicy voice which emanates from His auspicious mouth since ages.
Eyes become oblivious of our existence even when they see us, such is the voice of Krishna.
A sweet doubt prevails that we haven't heard His voice. Even on replying the tongue forgets that it has said something to Him? We are immersed and infatuated by the existence of rasa and it leaves us dumbfounded.
Eyes and ears forget themselves.
Forgetting is losing ourselves and not being aware of our existence. Furthermore, we remain unsatisfied, always thirsting for rasa.
Shri Radha-Krishna Oblivious of Their Surroundings
Rasa pervaded our being which means it made us thirsty and restless. Dallying and sporting are perfect words for expressing the presence of rasa. The word rasa makes both Shri Radha and Krishna oblivious of their surroundings. They are embracing each other but it doesn't seem so, they are wrapped in each other's arms but it doesn't seem so, they are constantly gazing at each other with infatuation but it doesn't seem so.
Both, Shri Radha, the Beloved and Krishna, the Supreme Lover, are an integral part of rasa, as they dally and play with each other.
Shri Radha-Krishna Are Interdependent
That means both are equal in importance and neither is greater than the other. The two of them are interdependent and rely on each other. Dependence, infatuation and reliance are their inherent nature, which instinctively indicate their presence.
It is but natural for them to be engaged in loving pastimes, and their state of interpersonal romantic exchange is constant. There is no need to be astonished about this reality.
'You and I are the essence of everything,' they tell each other. However, this can’t be said and can never be heard.
'You evolve from Me and I from You,' this is also unheard of.
Shri Radha-Krishna in Union with Each Other
The mystery underlying the word 'evolve’ implies a state of being in union with each other and staying in that condition.
Tum Nikat Main Nikat Tam
'tum nikat main nikat tam', this bhava of nearness has indeed arisen from Shri Radha-Krishna. Both are near each other and this leads to a romantic dalliance taking place at that very moment. Shri Radha-Krishna are heading for mutual union.
Apprehensive of Separation
Both of them are drowning, plunging and are stirred by emotion, but the ocean of rasa is infinite. Neither is there a particle of rasa, nor a fragment of rasa, or a wave of rasa but of course the ocean of rasa is unfathomable.
Both Radha and Krishna seem to be infinite oceans of rasa.
Radha-Krishna's Rasa Can Be Seen in Sarovars
The reflection of rasa can be seen in sarovars [6], sopans [7],charming forest paths and dust particles.
If Shri Radha-Krishna appear together once their presence persists in sarovars and sopans as they ascend and descend.
They do not exist in isolation either in sarovars or forest paths or sopans leading to sarovars.
In this way the mind, eyes, ears, and every fibre of our being relishes their rasa.
Honey Bee Hovers Over a Lotus
The sopans leading to sarovars, the rows of lotuses in a pond, the lotus on which the honey bee hovers are all interlinked and do not have an identity of their own.
All the sarovars are adorned and surrounded by earthly grassy green fields.
Shri Radha is Likened to a Chakori
Shri Radha can be likened to a chakori [8] infatuated by the moon and Krishna to a honey bee intoxicated by the fragrant juice and pollen of a lotus.
Rasa prevails in the eyes, mind, ears and every fibre of our being. So if we have a mind, eyes and ears, rasa has been delighting, been fully adorned and dallying since eternity.
Sakhis Drawn by Supreme Lover Krishna
A romantic dalliance keeps taking place amidst the enraptured cowherdesses, yearning for union with their Supreme Lover, Krishna, in earthly Vrindavan. There is no need to be astonished about this playful dalliance. It is but natural for His hungering devotees to be passionately drawn by Krishna. This dalliance takes play every second and this form of Krishna as the Supreme Lover keeps amazing us.
There is nothing to be astonished about on beholding our Supreme Lover dallying with the herd of sakhis who relish His rasa. It is the nitya leela which takes place every day and eternally.
A sweet apprehension nags the sakhis and they wonder if the beauteous form of blue-hued Krishna is actually pervading their eyes, and His nectarine words are actually being heard by them.
They feel that the ineffably beauteous form of Krishna can’t be contained in their eyes but it pervades them.
The fact that their ears are recipients of nectarine words flowing from His auspicious mouth astonishes the sakhis.
Is Blue-hued Krishna Physically Close
Is the blue-hued form of Krishna truly dallying, stirred by emotion and in contact with their bodies, they wonder.
"It is true that I am 'nikat tam ' or nearer but what is so astonishing about it!"
Shri Radha-Krishna's Nakh Shikh Shringara
Shri Radha-Krishna's nakh shikh shringara from head to toe, gives mysterious directions through mute messages. The nature of ornaments adorning their bodies is such that it reveals where these two are going to roam.
The experience of hearing their mutually tinkling anklets when they roam around remains the same. Our mind is the deciding factor which determines whether their mutual shringara is inseparable or shringara is their svarupa.
Ornaments draw us to the lustrous blossoming lotus on their own, without being guided by body fragrance.
The entire forest and forest path (animate and inanimate beings in the forest) are not isolated from their body fragrance and lustre.
The Tinkling Anklets of Shri Radha-Krishna
The tinkling anklets of Shri Radha-Krishna point out the forest they are going to roam in.
'You are the lotus and I am the charming sarovar. As a wave I am astonished by the dancing movements of Your lotus feet, and am enraptured.' The message given here is that it is but natural for a bumble bee which is eager to taste pollen, to be drawn by the fragrant lotus. Similarly, the full moon is passionately drawn by moonbeams on an autumnal full moon night.
Likewise, the melodious flute sound emanating from Krishna's red lips is the sweet path taken by enraptured cowherdesses, passionately longing to relish the rasa flowing from Krishna's lips.
The svarupa of a rasikni[9] is no different from the fragrance of His lotus face, the rasa or nectar gushing from His red lips, and cool moonbeams exuding from His face.
The charming, incomparable, inexpressible and unique svarupa[10] of the hungering devotee is mysterious.
Lotus Feet of Dark-hued Krishna
When we see a bumblebee sucking honey from the lotus flower it is but natural for the tender red lotus feet of Krishna, the Supreme Lover, to manifest and for our eyes to see them.
Eyes mean seeing Shri Radha-Krishna’s nakh shikh shringara from head to toe.
Ears have been called rasa-containing vessels and this is no exaggeration. The nature of our ears is to be engrossed in constantly relishing rasa.
Krishna's Lotus Eyes
It is strangely amazing that without becoming one with the sweetness of Krishna's lotus eyes it is not possible to savour His rasa. Ears have been called recipients of the gushing rasa of His beauteous form.
1. rasa:Krishna is full in himself, yet he is full of love, and love is never satisfied with itself. To taste himself more fully he manifests as two—Radha and Krishna. The two, rasa and prema, are essentially one. Krishna is rasa and Radha is prema. One has little meaning without the other. Rasa is the highest taste and prema is the means of tasting it. Krishna desires to be one with Radha, for as much as love requires two, it is all about two becoming one. Krishna must do this to preserve His original purpose of fully tasting himself. He must become one with Radha while preserving both of their identities.
[2] reside in: Krishna resides in prakriti which is Radha. Krishna manifests as two, Radha and Krishna, to taste Himself more fully
[3] Supreme Form: Krishna has the Supreme Form. He is the original and primeval person who expands throughout existence and simultaneously resides in His eternal abode in His original, transcendental form. No one is more beautiful or attractive than He. Above all, Krishna attracts the minds of all living entities. He resides in the hearts of all living beings and in every atom of matter
[4] prakriti: means nature, Radha represents prema, the emotional aspect of prakriti. We can relish Krishna's rasa fully when we assume the Radha Bhava.
